I started farming in 2012 with only vegetables but over time curiosity got the better of me and soon added chicken meat birds and pigs.  Participation in farmers markets from 2013-2016 was a fun experience but in the end not for me.  I needed to scale down and do more things I enjoy.  Not that I did not enjoy farming, but because I also enjoyed other activities, particularly creative activities like cooking.

I finally landed on my little piece of paradise where I raise 100 meat bird chickens at a time, the majority of their lives spent in my garden.  My method for raising meat birds changed to be another step closer to efficient by creating soil/medium in no tillage system and growing meat(or eggs) at the same time.  I leave the pens in a single spot for a week, but add hay the 2nd morning, and pine shavings every day after that until they move.  Once moved, the location they just were on is lightly covered with peat moss.

I plant transplants into this soil-less medium mating the bottom of the plug to the bare soil and covering back around with the medium.  This medium generally stays wet by irrigation as it is a sort of hydroponic system, utilizing the bare minimums with high output and low labor.

The soil-less medium has very little weeds.  Compared to tilled soil, the labor hours for weeding the soil-less beds are greatly reduced.  Over time it becomes better and I am experimenting with different mulch and material to use as the litter in the chicken pens, only to be used a week later as a soil-less growing medium.

With the farmstuffs I produce, most of it is being made into meals.  Please email grantwallacefarm@gmail.com to be invited to my farm to table dinners.

Rarely you can purchase our excess.  This includes vegetables of all kinds and whole chickens.  Email me with your email address and I will add you to the list.

Email me for a time to schedule a unique dining experience.
